Me, the yogi / Ich, die Yogini

You beautiful people,

how are you on this fine day? I hope you feel alive!

Have I told you I'm a yogi? You may know from the post on my Canada album that I am actually a certified yoga teacher. I never intended to teach though. When I decided to take time off school, I didn't only want to travel, but take some time completely out off this world, no distractions, just focussing on myself. And in the spirit of Eat Pray Love (you know, the book by Elizabeth Gilbert) I thought staying at an ashram would be the right place to do exactly that. And it just so happened that there was a yoga teacher training course at an ashram in Canada right during the time I was going to be there. Believe in fate or don't, but I think the universe was trying to tell me something :)
So I went, had a blast, cursed myself for spending a lot of money to be sleep deprived, found the peace in a regular practice and meditation, was weirded out by rituals, met the most amazing people, and learned not only how to teach beginner's yoga, but also a lot about myself and how I want my life to be. To describe it in a word: INTENSE!

I took my first yoga lesson when I was about 17, and completely fell in love. I practiced regularly for about two years, up until I graduated high school, and left my hometown and yoga teacher for higher education. Eversince then, I did yoga on and off - sometimes almost every day, sometimes not at all.
After a while of doing no yoga whatsoever, I can feel my body aching for it, reminding me of how much better I feel after spending some time on my mat. And I'm not only talking body here: Yoga makes me calmer, allows me to deal with all the things life throws at me with a positive, open, and kind mind. And most of all, it gives me the right attitude to live a content life. Now ain't that something?

I know some people who like flirting with the idea of doing yoga, but they get insecure because they think they're not bendy enough to actually do it. I get it. Stepping into a class for the first time, looking at the other students who may have a headstart on you, may push your mind right into comparison mode. But one of the things yoga teaches you, is that you do not have to compare, because your practice is solely about you. It doesn't matter how bendy you are in the beginning. It matters how doing yoga makes you feel - and the bendiness comes with practice. There is a very popular quote. I don't know who said it, and being honest, it doesn't really matter. "Yoga is not about touching your toes; it's about what you learn on your way down."

So if you feel like connecting with yourself, and finding peace within yourself to live a contented life, I suggest you get on a mat (even though a floor might do).
