Even cell phones need a shelter / Auch Handys brauchen einen Unterschlupf

Hello hello hello, a few months ago I got myself a new cell phone. Not because I always have to have the newest stuff - I'm against throwawayism of any kind - but because the old one challenged my calm nature on a dayly basis with its refusals to do what it was put on this world to do. Anyway, I didn't really like the cases I saw for the new phone (I call it Lola. Don't ask why, but I tend to name things), but it was also too expensive to leave it all sad and defenseless. It probably doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out I decided to make one myself.

Halli hallo, vor ein paar Monaten habe ich mir ein neues Handy zugelegt. Nicht, weil ich immer das Neueste vom Neuesten haben muss - ich bin gegen diese ganze Wegwerferei von noch funktionsfähigen Dingen - sondern weil das alte Handy tagtäglich mein ruhiges Wesen herausgefordert hat, weil es sich ständig weigerte das zu tun, wozu es entwickelt wurde. Jedenfalls gefielen mir all die Handyhüllen, die man so für das Handy (ich nenne es Lola. Fragt nicht warum, aber ich habe die Angewohnheit, Dinge zu benennen) kaufen kann, eigentlich gar nicht. Aber irgendwie war das Handy auch zu teuer, um es einfach traurig und schutzlos rumliegen zu lassen. Ihr könnt euch wohl schon denken, dass ich einfach beschloss, mir eine eigene Hülle zu basteln.

After browsing the internet for a while, searching for inspiration, I found that a case made out of felt would suit me best. It looks cozy and relaxed (just like me ;)), and is very easy to personalize. Since I'm obsessed with the colour grey, for pretty much the same reasons, I went with a grey base out of fairly thick felt, and sewed on green leaves I had cut out of a thinner felt sheet. The design is pretty simple. Considering it was my first time making something out of felt, I had to test the water first. To close the case, I made a loop out of an elastic that can be hooked around a button in the back. Simple, yet efficient.

Nachdem ich mich eine Weile von den unendlichen Weiten des Internets inspirieren lassen hatte, kam ich zu dem Schluss, dass eine Hülle aus Filz am besten zu mir passt. Es sieht gemütlich und relaxed aus (so wie ich eben ;))und lässt sich ziemlich einfach personalisieren. Und da ich momentan Grau ganz toll finde - vermutlich aus den selben Gründen - machte ich die Hülle aus grauem, ziemlich dickem Filz und nähte grüne Blätter darauf, die ich aus dünnerem Filz ausgeschnitten hatte. Das Design ist ziemlich einfach, weil ich bei meinem ersten Versuch, mit Filz zu arbeiten, ja erstmal austesten musste, wie ich mich dabei so anstelle. Um die Hülle zu schließen, habe ich einen kleinen Haargummi in die Lasche genäht, den man dann um einen kleinen Knopf auf der Rückseite legen kann. Einfach, aber wirksam.

Me, being the proud craftswoman that I am, ran off to show my sister my new creation. And guess what: She didn't like her cell phone case either, loved the one I had made though. So me, being the nice sister that I am, ran back home to make another case for her - with an owl on it - because she is obsessed with owls - which is cute, turning spooky. Sorry sis :* And then I made a third one, for my other sister of course... have to treat them equally, now don't I? I have to say, handsewing all the small parts for the owl and flower took me quite a while. But guess what will be under my Christmas tree this year. A sewing machine... whoever says the greatest pleasure lies in anticipation, has no idea of the pleasure this sewing machine will bring to me. So this is my story for today. Und da ich nun mal stolz auf meine Kreationen bin, bin ich sofort zu meiner Schwester gerannt, um ihr die Hülle zu zeigen. Und ratet mal: Sie mochte ihre eigene Hülle auch nicht, fand meine hingegen toll. Und da ich nun mal eine nette Schwester bin, bin ich wieder nach Hause gerannt, um noch eine Hülle zu machen - mit einer Eule darauf - weil meine Schwester von Eulen besessen ist - was süß ist, oder auch langsam gruslig. 'Schuldigung, Schwesterherz :* Und dann machte ich natürlich noch eine dritte Hülle für meine andere Schwester... möchte die beiden ja gleich behandeln. Ich muss schon sagen, dass es eine ganze Weile gebraucht hat, bis ich die vielen Einzelteile der Eule und der Blume von Hand auf die Hüllen genäht hatte. Aber ratet mal, was dieses Jahr unter meinem Weihnachtsbaum liegen wird. Eine Nähmaschine... wer behauptet, Vorfreude sei die schönste Freude, hat keine Ahnung, was für eine riesige Freude ich an der Nähmaschine haben werde. So, das war es für heute von mir. Vegetable stew / Gemüse-Schmortopf

Hey there! You may or may not know that I LOVE food. And not just eating it, but preparing it as well. A kitchen filled with the smell of sizzling onions, freshly baked bread, or a fluffy cake is something I would not want to miss for a million bucks. There is so much great food out there, so many flavours - it makes my mouth water just thinking about it (ok, the maple candy I just put into my mouth may also have something to do with that). I like to come up with new dishes, and to modify recipes from cookbooks. I just enjoy trying new things. So when I opened my vegetable box a few days ago, I noticed all the root vegetables in there, and thought to myself: Hm, a root vegetabel stew with lots of garlic and red wine; that sounds delicious. So I started peeling and chopping and voilà, this is what my dinner looked like that night. Probably nothing completely new, but yummy nonetheless.

Hallöchen! Wie ihr vielleicht wisst, liebe ich Essen über alles. Und zwar nicht nur das Essen selbst, sondern auch das Kochen. Eine Küche, die sich mit dem Geruch von brutzelnden Zwiebeln, frisch gebackenem Brot oder einem fluffigen Kuchen füllt, möchte ich für kein Geld der Welt missen. Es gibt so viel leckeres Essen, so viele verschiedene Geschmacksrichtungen - mir läuft das Wasser im Mund zusammen, wenn ich nur daran denke (ok, das Ahorn-Bonbon, das ich mir eben in den Mund gesteckt habe, könnte auch was damit zu tun haben). Jedenfalls lasse ich mir gerne neue Gerichte einfallen und wandle Rezepte aus Kochbüchern ab. Ich probiere eben einfach gerne herum. Und als ich neulich in meine Gemüsebox schaute, fiel mir auf, dass ich eine Menge Wurzelgemüse hatte, und dachte mir plötzlich: Hm, ein Schmortopf aus Wurzelgemüse, mit viel Knoblauch und Rotwein; das klingt lecker. Also machte ich mich ans Schälen und Schnibbeln und voilà, so sah mein Abendessen dann aus. Vermutlich keine ganz neue Idee, aber trotzdem jammi.

ingredients: 4 big potatoes 6 carrots 2 beetroots 2 parsnips 1 big onion 6 cloves of garlic olive oil salt, rosemary, marjoram 50g tomato paste red wine to deglaze Peel the potatoes, carrots, beetroots, and parsnips, and cut into bite-sized pieces. Peel the garlic (I used one single clove garlic and cut it into about six pieces) and the onion, and cut it into eighths. (By the way, you don't need to peel your vegetables if it is organic. I just do it because I'm so used to doing it.) Toss everything into a stew pot, prinkle olive oil over it liberally, and season with salt, rosemary (either dried or fresh), and marjoram to taste. You can also use pepper. I don't because I don't like the taste of it, but feel free to add whatever spices you fancy. Mix the tomato paste with just enough water to make a thick sauce, and pour over the vegetables. Mix well. Put in the oven at 200° Celsius for about 30 minutes, stir once in a while. Then add a nice dash of red wine over it, stir, and let roast for another 5-10 minutes. The time may vary depending on your oven and the size of your vegetable pieces.

Zutaten: 4 große Kartoffeln 6 Karotten 2 Knollen Rote Beete 2 Pastinaken 1 große Zwiebel 6 Zehen Knoblauch Olivenöl Salz, Rosmarin, Majoran 50g Tomatenmark Rotwein zum Ablöschen Die Kartoffeln, Karotten, Rote Beete und Pastinaken schälen und in mundgerechte Stücke schneiden. Die Knoblauchzehen schälen (ich habe chinesischen Knoblauch verwendet und ihn in etwa 6 Stücke geschnitten) und die Zwiebel schälen und achteln. (Ach übrigens, das Gemüse muss nicht unbedingt geschält werden, wenn es Bio ist. Ich schäle es nur, weil ich es noch immer so gewohnt bin.) Alles in einen Schmortopf geben, großzügig mit Olivenöl beträufeln und mit Salz, Rosmarin (getrocknet oder frisch) und Majoran würzen. Ihr könnt auch Pfeffer verwenden, ich mag allerdings den Geschmack nicht. Außerdem könnt ihr natürlich noch andere Gewürze verwenden, die euch gerade anmachen. Das Tomatenmark mit so viel Wasser mischen, dass eine recht dickflüssige Sauce entsteht, und ebenfalls über das Gemüse geben. Gut miteinander vermischen. Im Ofen bei 200° Celsius für etwa 30 Minuten garen und dabei ab und zu umrühren. Mit einem guten Schuss Rotwein ablöschen, umrühren und für weitere 5-10 Minuten schmoren lassen. Die Zeit kann je nach Ofen und der Größe der Gemüsestücke abweichen.

I just love the colour the beetroots give the dish. You can leave out any vegetable you don't like, or put in other vegetables you love. This dish is nice on its own, or as a side dish for a hearty roast (preferably vegan, of course). Now dig in and enjoy

Ich liebe die Farbe, die das Gericht durch die rote Beete bekommt. Ihr könnt natürlich Gemüse weglassen, das ihr nicht mögt, oder andere Gemüsesorten dazutun. Der Schmortopf schmeckt lecker allein oder als Beilage zu einem deftigen Braten (am besten ein veganer, versteht sich). Lasst es euch schmecken

Next year, coming soon / Demnächst: Ein neues Jahr

Hello friends, if you follow me on twitter or instagram you may know that lately I've been working on the planners for next year. My neighbour ordered one, so I made his. And I wanted to try out a different layout and size for mine. I love the quite small pocket calendars that I usually make because they are so light and small enough to fit in a purse, so wherever I go, I can take them with me. It's quite convenient, actually. I do, however, also like to treat my planner as a sort of diary and notebook, not just something that reminds me of appointments. Being able to scribble down random thoughts, make notes on what happens in my life and other things like that, is something I enjoy. And as much as I like my notebook, which is perfect for longer thoughts and planning things and charts and doodles and I don't know what - I don't want to take my calendar AND my notebook with me all the time.

Hallo Freunde, wenn ihr mir auf twitter oder instagram folgt, habt ihr vielleicht schon mitgekriegt, dass ich in letzter Zeit an Kalendern für nächstes Jahr gearbeitet habe. Mein Nachbar wollte einen, also habe ich einen für ihn gemacht. Außerdem wollte ich bei meinem eigenen Kalender etwas Neues für Format und Layout ausprobieren. Ich finde die kleinen Taschenkalender, die ich normalerweise mache, toll. Sie sind so leicht und kleine genug, dass ich sie in meine Handtasche stecken kann und immer dabei habe, egal, wo ich hingehe. Das finde ich ziemlich praktisch. Allerdings mag ich es auch, wenn ich meinen Kalender auch als eine Art Tagebuch und Notizbuch verwenden kann, und er mich nicht nur an Termine erinnert. Ich mag es einfach, wenn ich wahllos Gedanken aufschreiben und Notizen darüber machen kann, was gerade so in meinem Leben passiert. Und so sehr ich mein Notizbuch auch mag, weil es perfekt ist für längere Texte, Planungen, Tabellen, Grafiken und Kritzeleien, will ich trotzdem nicht immer mit Kalender UND Notizbuch durch die Gegend laufen.

So I decided to mix the two. On the left page, there is a typical planner for a week with space for appointments. And on the right page, there is space for things I am grateful for, random stuff, a to do list, and an inspirational quote. I'm already curious how well the quotes will fit the week they show up in. And because I want the next year to be all about CREATING - creating beautiful things, creating a colourful and amazing life, getting dreams to come true - there is also space for things that I can do to actually achieve all that. (Here comes a big shout out and thank you to Tara Bliss and Rachel MacDonald, whose blogs and ebook Spirited inspired me to create this planner the way it is now. And a lot of the quotes I used are actually from them. Seriously guys, check them out!)

Also habe ich beschlossen, die beiden miteinander zu verbinden. Auf der linken Seite ist ein typischer Kalender mit Platz für Termine. Und auf der rechten Seite ist Platz für: Dinge, für die ich dankbar bin; beliebige Gedanken; To do-Listen. Außerdem gibt es für jede Woche auch ein inspirierendes Zitat. Ich bin schon gespannt, wie gut die Zitate letztendlich zu den Wochen passen, in denen sie erscheinen. Und weil sich das nächste Jahr ganz ums ERSCHAFFEN drehen soll - schöne Dinge herstellen, ein farbenfrohes und wundervolles Leben gestalten, Träume wirklich werden lassen - gibt es auch Platz für Dinge, die ich tun kann, um das tatsächlich alles zu erreichen. (An diese Stelle ein großes Hallo an Tara Bliss und Rachel MacDonald, deren Blogs und eBook Spirited mich dazu inspiriert haben, diesen Kalender so zu gestalten. Viele der Zitate, die ich darin verwende, kommen von den beiden. Ernsthaft, schaut euch mal auf ihren Blogs um!)

I can't wait to wrap up this year and dive headfirst into all my intentions and goals for the coming - with my inspiring companion by my side. And now I will go do what I like to do most: getting to work on some more planners to brighten up other people's year. What elephants and owls have in common / Was Elefanten und Eulen gemeinsam haben

Hello lovely friends, have I told you I'm an aunt? It is all so very exciting and heart-opening (yay, the yogi in me says) and delightful and beautiful. There is no word in neither the German nor the English language to describe how much I am in love with this little person! I feel very blessed to be a part of my niece's (yet quite short) life. And you know, when my heart just bubbles over with joy, I either need to hug someone very, very tight - which is not a good idea with a small baby; wouldn't want to crush her - or find a creative outlet for all that emotion. So when my sister mentioned, she wanted a mobile for the baby's crib, I got to work (remember my little teaser on instagram?).

Hallo meine lieben Freunde, habe ich euch schon erzählt, dass ich Tante bin? Es ist alles so aufregend und herzöffnend (der Yogi in mir sagt hurra) und herrlich und wunderschön. Es gibt kein Wort, weder auf Deutsch noch auf Englisch, das beschreibt, wie lieb ich diese kleine Person habe! Was ein Glück ich habe, ein Teil ihres bisher noch recht kurzen Lebens zu sein. Und wisst ihr, wenn mein Herz vor Freude übersprudelt, muss ich entweder jemanden sehr, sehr fest umarmen - was bei einem kleinen Baby keine gute Idee ist; will sie ja nicht zerdrücken - oder mir ein kreatives Ventil für all die Emotionen suchen. Als meine Schwester also meinte, dass sie gerne ein Mobile für die Wiege hätte, habe ich mich ans Werk gemacht (erinnert ihr euch an meine kleine Vorschau auf instagram?).

The nursery's theme is "Owls and Elephants", so obviously there had to be an owl and an elephant hanging from the mobile. Then I asked myself what other animals I liked, and decided on ducks, frogs, and butterflies, and added a bee (needed to get some yellow in there). And now that I think of it, my brain totally forgot about pigs. Can't believe that happened! How could I forget cute little piggies!? And sheep. But hey, there's a cloud, and that's pretty much the same thing :) Anyway, I took felt and cut out pieces the shape of the animals - twice per animal - added eyes, ears, wings, beaks to one of the two pieces, and then sewed them together with an embroidery stitch, leaving a little hole to fill the animal with cotton wool before closing it completely. Then I hung the finished felt animals to a bamboo ring, put a loop in the suspension thread, and was excited as a little kid in a toy store, because I couldn't wait to show the mobile to the cutie pie. Her face when she first saw it hanging over her: priceless.

Die Thematik des Kinderzimmers ist "Eulen und Elefanten", also war schon klar, dass auf jeden Fall eine Eule und ein Elefant am Mobile hängen müssen. Dann überlegte ich mir, welche anderen Tiere ich noch mag, entschied mich für Enten, Frösche und Schmetterlinge, und machte noch eine Biene dazu (ich wollte noch was Gelbes dabei haben). Und wenn ich jetzt so darüber nachdenken, hat mein Hirn doch tatsächlich Schweine vergessen. Ich kann nicht glauben, dass mir das passiert ist! Wie konnte ich süße kleine Schweinchen vergessen!? Und Schafe. Aber hey, es gibt eine Wolke, und das ist ja fast das gleiche :) Egal, jedenfalls habe ich aus dem Filz Teile in Form der Tiere ausgeschnitten - zwei pro Tier - nähte Augen, Ohren, Flügel, Schnäbel auf einen der beiden Teile, dann nähte ich sie mit einem Zierstich zusammen und ließ nur ein kleines Loch, um das Tier mit Watte füllen zu können, bevor ich es komplett schloss. Danach hängte ich die fertigen Filztierchen mit starkem Garn an einen Bambusring, formte an den Fäden der Aufhängung eine Schlaufe, um das Mobile an der Wiege befestigen zu können und war von da an aufgeregt wie ein Kind im Spielwarenladen, weil ich es kaum erwarten konnte, der kleinen Maus ihr Mobile zu geben. Ihr Blick, als es zum ersten Mal über ihr hing: unbezahlbar.

Something new every now and then / Immer mal wieder was Neues

Hello gorgeous, how's it going? Just a quick announcement from my end of the wire. As much as I love book binding, it's not my only hobby. Knitting, crocheting, working with felt, are just some of the things I almost like as much. I guess I'm a granny in a young woman's body ;) That's why in the next few weeks, I will create some space in this blog for my other creative projects, that I wouldn't want you to miss. Hallo meine Lieben, wie geht es euch? Hier eine schnelle Ankündigung von meiner Seite. So sehr ich das Buchbinden auch liebe, es ist nicht mein einziges Hobby. Stricken, Häkeln, Arbeiten mit Filz und alles mögliche andere mache ich fast genauso gerne.
